Colored Pencil

When I first started using colored pencils I used Rose Art and Crayola and for what I was doing they worked fine. However, when I started getting into the collage art I found that the professional pencils such as Prisma were amazing and took me a little while to get the hang of how to use them. Prisma pencils tend to be much softer than the harder pencils such as Rose Art and Crayola. They are also have a more vibrant pigment and blend easily allowing colors to smoothly transition into each other. They are more expensive, running about $1.50 per pencil but the price is well worth the quality that you get from them.

The butterflies are finally in and I will be picking it up tomorrow morning and then starts the painting process.

I will be picking up the butterfly for the Huntsville Botanical garden piece this week. Here is a picture of what the blank piece looks like. They are hand carved by an Italian wood carver who then sands and primes the pieces so they are ready to paint on.

Sometime in January I will be starting a project that is sponsored by the Huntsville Botanical gardens. They are distributing roughly 35 fiberglass butterflies that will be painted by the artists and then will be on display during the summer. The piece I have displayed above is probably a good representation of what the pieces will look like. They are roughly five feet in dimension and each artist will be able to paint them as they please. I am planning on painting scenes from my upcoming "Who, What and Where of Huntsville" piece on one of the butterflies. I will be posting the progression of this piece on my website and also on this blog. Stay tuned!

I just want to say welcome and thank you to everyone that will be joining my blog. I hope this will be a good way to start giving people updates as to what is coming up with my artwork and to give you the ability to interact and give me feedback. I want to give people the ability to get involved with my work and tell me what you want to see on the up coming pieces. I can't tell you how many times I have added scenes to my pieces because someone mentioned that I needed to add something that I didn't even know about.
